IP and Innovation: stimulating opportunities for universities

Workshop training

Date: 19-22 October 2009

Venue: University of Alicante, Spain

Objective:

The aim of the workshop was to augment universities’ capacity to manage intellectual property rights in research at strategic and implementation levels.

Description:

The workshop, “IP and Innovation: stimulating opportunities for Universities”, opened with a speech by Dr. Manuel Desantes, Professor of Law at the University of Alicante and Former Vice-President of the European Patent Office (EPO), on Intellectual Property Policy. The trainers and participants from both Europe and Asia were then divided into two small training groups. The size of the groups provided better exchange of ideas, knowledge and good practice with a focus on institutional IP strategy planning, legal issues, patent drafting and how to apply theories to real life cases.

Apart from the visits to the Trade Marks and Designs Registration Office of the European Union (OHIM) and Planta Cero (an integrated laboratory of the University of Alicante), the Technology Transfer Office of the UA also shared insights on common Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) issues with our Asian counterparts.

IPR academics, experts from research institutions and patent offices were invited to share their experience. Not only did the workshop attract legal officers, lecturers, directors of technology transfer centres from various Southeast Asian universities, it also attracted the participation of European private sectors. Thanks to the co-operation with ASEAN University Network, a good geographical coverage in the Southeast Asia has been obtained; Malaysia, Indonesia and a comprehensive coverage of Thailand.

The workshop was found to be useful and comprehensive. The Asian participants reviewed good practices from Europe based on the actual needs and situation of their own country. Similar workshops are expected in the future with a more in depth knowledge exchange in some particular topics.
